Für das antike Judentum liegt bislang keine umfassende Geschichte des Lesens vor: Diese Forschungslücke will Jonas Leipziger füllen, indem er anhand der Trias von Rezeptionsakten, Materialität und Schriftgebrauch die Entwicklung von rituellen Lesepraktiken im antiken Judentum nachzeichnet.Er nimmt eine historische Kontextualisierung jüdischer Lesepraktiken vor, indem er deren methodische Grundlagen klärt (I), die Voraussetzungen der Formen von Textrezeption herausarbeitet (II) und die materialen Dimensionen des Lesens (Rollen, Codices; nomina sacra) untersucht (III). In einer historisch differenzierten Darstellung diskutiert er verschiedene soziale Orte von Lesepraktiken (IV) und unterschiedliche Gemeinschaften und ihre spezifischen Praktiken des Lesens (V). Schließlich werden Praktiken der Schriftrezeption dargelegt, die in schrifttragenden Artefakten eine magische Präsenz und inhärente Wirkmächtigkeit sehen (VI).Die Studie zeigt somit auf, wie sich jüdische Lesepraktiken historisch entwickeln, macht eine kontinuierliche jüdische Rezeption der griechischen Bibel - auch in Codex-Form - von der Antike bis in die Neuzeit deutlich und leistet dadurch einen grundlegenden Beitrag für die Erforschung der Geschichte des antiken Judentums.

Volume 5 examines the history of Judaism in the Islamic World from the rise of Islam in the early sixth century to the expulsion of Jews from Spain at the end of the fifteenth. This period witnessed radical transformations both within the Jewish community itself and in the broader contexts in which the Jews found themselves. The rise of Islam had a decisive influence on Jews and Judaism as the conditions of daily life and elite culture shifted throughout the Islamicate world. Islamic conquest and expansion affected the shape of the Jewish community as the center of gravity shifted west to the North African communities, and long-distance trading opportunities led to the establishment of trading diasporas and flourishing communities as far east as India. By the end of our period, many of the communities on the 'other' side of the Mediterranean had come into their own-while many of the Jewish communities in the Islamicate world had retreated from their high-water mark.

Scepticism has been the driving force in the development of Greco-Roman culture in the past, and the impetus for far-reaching scientific achievements and philosophical investigation. Early Jewish culture, in contrast, avoided creating consistent representations of its philosophical doctrines. Sceptical notions can nevertheless be found in some early Jewish literature such as the Book of Ecclesiastes. One encounters there expressions of doubt with respect to Divine justice or even Divine involvement in earthly affairs. During the first centuries of the common era, however, Jewish thought, as reflected in rabbinic works, was engaged in persistent intellectual activity devoted to the laws, norms, regulations, exegesis and other traditional areas of Jewish religious knowledge. An effort to detect sceptical ideas in ancient Judaism, therefore, requires a closer analysis of this literary heritage and its cultural context.This volume of collected essays seeks to tackle the question of scepticism in an Early Jewish context, including Ecclesiastes and other Jewish Second Temple works, rabbinic midrashic and talmudic literature, and reflections of Jewish thought in early Christian and patristic writings.
